Insanity, the Asylum: End of Day 8

As a former high school and college athlete, drills are familiar territory.

Shaun T in the Asylum takes drills to the next level.

This workout is not for the weary. If you are dedicated and have a solid mind set as an athlete in training, this is the workout for you.

If you are just starting out, looking for a workout that’s fun and going to give you weight loss results, check out Turbojams, Slim in 6, or Body Gospel.

Even though I did not do the Insanity workout, I have no problem doing Asylum. I have done Turbofire twice and I did one month of P90X. I had all intentions of finishing P90X, but it got really boring, and as a stay at home mom running a business, those workouts were too long and too much concentration was on strength for me. No prior knowledge of Insanity seems to be necessary, as long as you’ve done intense cardio before.

Asylum is a lot of cardio. Even the strength is cardio. Yesterday, I did the Strength workout for the second time. I used 10 pound dumbbells through the whole workout. I didn’t need the chin up bar. I was able to use the dumbbells when some of them were doing the chin up bar.

My favorite (haha) drill is the pyramid push ups. So you do one biceps curl, then one push up. Two biceps curls, then two push ups. Three biceps curls, then three push ups. You keep building until he calls time..I’d say about a minute.

The Vertical Plyo workout and the Speed and Agility workout both use the ladder that is included with the program.
The ladder drills are by far my favorite in those workouts.

He even has you do push ups while taking your hand and reaching the opposite shoulder while in the up position of the push up (plank) as you move through the ladder.

I’m telling you…no walk in the park, but I’ve noticed a change in my shoulders, and hubby noticed a difference in my obliques.

This was just what I needed to jump start my summer. I started May 1st, and will be done with this by May 31. Love it.

In the old days as a teacher, these were the days of finishing up work done all year to prepare for the final day of school. I look at Asylum as the final push to prepare for summer!

I’m ready to use this speed and agility to run around chasing Anthony! Love being a stay-at-home mom!

If you have any questions, please let me know! As always, I’m happy to help!

Have you done Asylum? What are your thoughts so far?

Have you done Insanity? What’s the toughest part?

Pieces of the Pie (Percentages and the Nutrition Facts Label)

You know that little label on the back of all packaged foods?

The nutrition facts label.

Funny, most of the times I’m all over it. Trying to figure out how many carbs, cals, protein, fiber grams.

Within the last 2 years, because of all of Anthony’s allergies, I am looking at it in a new way. Always looking underneath it too to see what types of allergens are in it or processed in the same plant.

There are times though that I try not to look at it. Especially when I was working as a teacher. Meals were rough. I was in grad school, hubby worked late, and so a frozen pizza or TGIFriday’s spinach dip from the freezer were common comforting meals at 9pm when we were home and finally eating dinner.

I didn’t even want to know what was on those labels at that point.

One part always confused me….those percentages. You know after it tells you how many grams of fat, etc. are in a serving it shows a percent value too?

Well, what the heck. It says on the bottom that it’s based off of a 2000 calorie diet. I never should have or should now be eating a 2000 calorie diet…so I have to do the math in the store and figure it out?

I just need a ballpark figure. So thinking…ok, if a serving of this is 20% of my daily value, but I can’t eat as much…let’s figure its 30%….so out of 5 small meals a day…is that ok?

I learned that anything lower than 5% is a low amount and 20% or more is high.

Now that freaked me out a bit. 20% sounds like a low number…1/5 of daily intake. But, actually it’s considered high.

So be sure to check out not only fat, fiber, calories, protein, and carbs. Check out the percent values of the vitamins.

That in itself was an eye opener…keeping in mind the whole 5% and 20% fact above.

Are you getting enough vitamins?

What are some foods that you consume on a daily basis to up your vitamin intake while staying within your caloric intake for the day as well as staying within the proper amounts of percentages for carbs, protein, fat, and fiber?

Insanity: The Asylum, 30 Day Challenge

Losing weight, getting into the swimsuit, skinny jeans, capris, tank tops, and summer clothing! All things in my Spring Vocabulary!

This year was the first year that there was no yo-yo dieting, no weight gain in the winter, and no bloated depressive feelings setting in come March.

It’s April and I’m ready! But…always ready to push to DO MORE and be the best.

My dad always told me when I was living at home…never ever settle for what you have achieved. If you get comfortable, you’ll never improve. Many times that was annoying to hear when I wanted to celebrate an achievement, but he really helped me keep it “real”.

I have been loving loving loving my second round of Turbofire workouts. It fits me. It’s fun, has great music, and I can fit it into my morning routine before my full time job as Anthony’s teacher and stay-at-home mom kicks in.

The second round ends at the end of the month. I’m ready to kick it up and DO MORE!

I’m going to start Insanity: The Asylum. No, I haven’t done the 60 days of Insanity yet, but I’m jumping into the Asylum. Heck, I was a teacher, I can follow directions and stay on track! I’m jumping to new heights in my health!

I’m looking for others who want to do this with me! I am looking for others to check-in with virtually just to compare notes and keep me motivated!

Are you looking for an intense calorie burning cardio workout? Come on! Let’s do this!

Message me and let’s get ready for the beach by June the 1st baby!!

First Few Days of Spring and Skinny Jeans

Spring is in the air…

Time for spring cleaning, opening our windows, spending more time outside, and rotating our wardrobe to the warmer weather clothes.

Warmer weather clothes…

Many times we dread having to shed the winter sweaters that we have been able to hide behind. I recall that feeling.

I always looked forward to the warm weather for the obvious reasons of summer vacation, being outside, barbecues, and summertime festivals. But, the thought of having to fit into my capris and my lighter clothes never sat well.

It’s March 21th. Are you dreading the rotation of your closet?

Fear not! I’m here to help!

1. Looking for a free place to workout with friends? My friends Grisel and Amie and I will be hosting a FREE workout down in Shorewood on Saturday mornings at 10am. We start April 23rd. Contact me so I can get you directions, etc. Bring a friend with you and let’s sweat away the calories while we have fun together. πŸ™‚

2. Want some virtual accountability from the comfort of your home? Round 2 of our weight loss group is starting up on April 11th. What does it cost? Returning members pay $5 and new members $10. What do you get?

Each participant is responsible for emailing me the answers to a series of accountability questions (What is your current weight? Did you reach your goal for the week? What did you do that helped/hurt you reach that goal this week? What is your goal for the week ahead? What do you plan to do this upcoming week to achieve your goal?) every Saturday. It runs from April 11th-July2nd. We have a Facebook group too and we share ideas, recipes, thoughts, questions, and inspiration. All of the prize money is divided up for the top 3 weight loss PERCENTAGE losers.

You know what’s so inspiring? 3 of my current challengers all said this week that they reached goals. Two were able to fit into pants they haven’t fit into in years and one was able to purchase a new dress for herself this weekend that was in the single digit sizes (one of her big goals). That’s what this is all about. Helping others achieve their goals.

I’m here, and would love to help YOU reach your goals.

A Challenge and Checking Things Off the Goal List for 2011

Did you set yourself some goals that you want to achieve in 2011?

I learned earlier in the year when I completed the 30 Day Challenge to write my goals down repeatedly once a week…same time…same place…EVERY week. By doing this, we WILL achieve our goals.

One goal I had was to jump out of my comfort zone and really increase my flexibility training.

Checked that off the list yesterday. πŸ™‚

Even though we had a time change…that didn’t stop us. Grisel, Liz, and I hopped in the RAV4 at 5am and drove up to Madison, Wisconsin for a PiYo training with Katy Meuer.

We were so happy we did! It was a 9-5 training…full of intense working out, a practical exam, and a written exam.

We won’t know for a few weeks if we passed or not, but we all felt really good when we were done!

Katy had tons of energy and really made us feel comfortable.

Plus, we bought some cool Turbowear. πŸ™‚ Here I am sporting my new Piyo tank. So comfy! I know…it’s sideways…I’m giving you the first step of the Piyo14 workout…a neck stretch! LOL!

Point being…check your goals for the year. Are you rewriting them every week? Accomplishing them?

Get outside of your comfort zone and do something different!

Katy told us that Chalene says to face your fear and do it anyway.

I even taught one line of the choreography to the whole class!

Fear? Faced it DEAD ON…and CONQUERED it!

Do you have a group of friends that want to learn Piyo (Pilates/Yoga fusion with some strength training in it…no weights or bands)? Let me know…I’d be happy to lead your group and share. Basements and family rooms are a great spot! πŸ™‚ Send me a message on Facebook!
